Motivational Interviewing: A Core Approach in Behavioral Health

Date: Tuesday, October 13, 2026
Time: 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM
Track: Concurrent Sessions

Description

Motivational Interviewing (MI) has become an essential evidence-based approach within behavioral and mental health settings, particularly when working with individuals facing complex challenges such as homelessness, substance use and co-occurring behavioral health conditions. In wraparound service models, where care coordination, collaboration and person-centered planning are central, MI serves as a foundational practice that strengthens engagement, improves service quality and supports ethical decision-making.

This session explores the use of Motivational Interviewing as a core component of quality wraparound behavioral health service delivery within integrated care systems that support underserved populations. Drawing from real-world practice within Integrated Healthcare Systems (IHCS), the presentation highlights how MI supports meaningful engagement, reduces resistance and empowers individuals to actively participate in their care plans. Particular attention is given to the four core MI processes — engaging, focusing, evoking and planning — and how they align naturally with wraparound principles such as strengths-based practice, self-determination and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The session also addresses common ethical challenges encountered in behavioral health and case management practice, including autonomy versus beneficence, perceived noncompliance and power imbalances between providers and clients. Grounded in The Commission® Code of Professional Conduct, MI is presented as a practical ethical framework that promotes respect for client autonomy, informed choice, cultural humility and dignity. Participants will examine how MI strategies can be ethically applied to mitigate conflict, support shared decision-making and maintain professional boundaries while delivering comprehensive services.

Attendees will leave with practical tools and strategies to integrate Motivational Interviewing into their daily practice, enhance the quality of behavioral health service delivery and navigate ethical dilemmas with confidence and compassion. This session reinforces the belief that quality care is not only defined by services provided, but by how those services are delivered — with empathy, integrity and respect for every individual’s lived experience.
